The game of bowls or lawn bowling in England can be traced back to the 12th century. Today it’s even more popular among young and old alike. In fact, for Patricia (Trish) Campbell, it’s the driving force of her life and has been for more than five decades since she first took up the sport in her 50’s. She’s still one passionate player, even celebrating her 101st birthday on the green. Actually, Trish drives herself to the club to play with the Northlands Bowling Club twice a week.

Benefits

Trish claims the sport has given her decades of wonderful experiences. She’s made many friends, enjoyed athletic success, and given her a purpose in life. When she meets someone who has retired and is wondering what to do with their time – she’s quick to encourage them to take up bowls. As an exercise, it’s better for you than you might think. Trish proclaims that bowls is wonderful for the hips.  She’s not wrong, but that’s not all the sport has to offer health wise. Bowls improves overall fitness, as well as coordination and skill development. Along the way it builds confidence and self-esteem as it’s a sport that you don’t need to be young to excel at – even as a beginner. Lastly, it can help with mental wellbeing by creating community.

100:100

Marching up and down the greens like she’s in her 50s, at 101 Trish continues to live at 100% for 100 years. Her 100 Year Lifestyle centers on her love of lawn bowling. What gets you up in the morning, excited about your day?
